Fun Facts about the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was the first museum on the West Coast dedicated solely to 20th-century art.
The museum’s collection includes over 33,000 works covering a wide range of mediums, from painting to media arts. Its original building, designed by Mario Botta, is famous for its cylindrical “silo” topped by a distinctive 130-foot elliptical skylight.
The 2016 expansion by Snøhetta more than doubled the gallery space and greatly increased public areas. SFMOMA houses the largest public living wall of native plants in San Francisco. Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, and Arshile Gorky had their first museum shows at SFMOMA.
The rooftop sculpture garden provides panoramic views of the city skyline, including the art deco 140 New Montgomery skyscraper. The museum was an early adopter of photography as an art form, developing its dedicated collection starting in 1936.
The fibre-reinforced plastic panels used in the expansion were the largest architectural application of this technology in the United States at that time. SFMOMA offers free admission for visitors 18 years and younger.
The Doris and Donald Fisher Collection on display includes more than 1,100 contemporary artworks loaned to the museum for 100 years.
The museum supports local arts organizations and artist residencies, contributing significantly to the Bay Area cultural scene.
